The Sailing Academy

The programme the sailors will go through takes place over 2 years and is designed to fit around their regular lives and school timetable. Courses and training will take place at weekends, mid term breaks and over the summer holidays. The next Academy intake will be in September 2016.

A sample programme for year 1 & 2 is outlined below.

 

Year 1
Spring
– Introduction to Power boating Certificate
– National Powerboat Certificate
– Assistant Dinghy Instructor Certificate
Summer
– 2 week work placement on the ULAC sailing camp. This will give sailors a chance to get hands on experience of life as a sailing instructor and also to log the valuable powerboat driving hours required to progress as an instructor.
September & October
– One day of intensive sail training each week to improve the sailors overall skill level and attain Kites & Wires Module.
 
Year 2
Spring
– 5 Days (3 weekends) of intensive pre instructor course training.
– Instructor pre-entry assessmentt run by National Trainer (Sailing skills and knowledge exam, participants must pass it in order to be allowed on the Instructor Course)
November
– VHF radio license
– Emergency Care course (first-aid)
September & October
– One day of intensive sail training each week to improve the sailors overall skill level.
June
– 5 Days Instructor Course run by an Irish Sailing Association Trainer
– All of the training on the course is provide in our modern fleet of sailing and powerboats by our experienced and highly qualified team of Instructors. All training will take place at UL activity Centre and on Lough Derg.
